Art by Jerry Garcia

An artist from childhood who was painting in oils by the age of seventeen, Jerry Garcia in his youth thought of himself as “an artist who played music,” Throughout the years of his prodigious musical output he continued drawing and painting.

Around 1983 he began to spend more time studying art, and by 1986 he had completed five large acrylic airbrush compositions which are among his best known works. “Facets II” and “Blue Iceberg” were painted at this time. Jerry did not return to airbrush after 1986; he preferred to continue drawing and painting in watercolor, but he also made a number of images in the computer.

In the watercolors, buoyant shapes and saturated colors infuse sky, earth and water. The nature pictures have a welcoming richness and generosity of spirit. Organic and crystalline structures are rendered in spectral colors.

Jerry is often at his best in the ink paintings - his brush laying down short, animated strokes. The immediacy of ink suited his nature; he enjoyed the bold play of an unforgiving medium that allows no corrections. Serendipitous, automatic, uninhibited, playful or gloomy, some of his most effective work is in ink.

He said “A line on paper is like a note in the air,” and once a mark is made, it can no more be erased than a note, once sounded, can be taken back. The ink painting entitled “Hunter” is a good example of the ink style. Brief and unhesitating, it is made of only a few lines.

SCA will exhibit and offer for sale 40 art works, each sale contributes entirely to supporting SCA, and is accompanied by a Foundation Edition Certificate of Authenticity, ensuring the integrity of each fine art piece.

Photography by Carol Scott

Carol Scott is a British Photographer who worked in America from 1976-1985. Heavily influenced by Rock and Roll, Scott’s photograph of Mick Jagger is part of the Permanent Collection, National Portrait Gallery, London, UK.

Scott has been keeping a collection of hidden unseen photographs for over 40 years and for the first time, will exhibit the work at SCA. After the Pandemic, and due to her daughter Cameron’s considerable encouragement and persistence, the two began looking through negatives and slides while listening to a playlist of music for inspiration, by the musicians Scott had photographed.

Scott is a graduate from the University of London and Laney College Photo Dept, Oakland, who originally bought a 35 mm Nikkormat camera in Nashville, Tennessee and then moved to Berkeley, CA as a single parent. There she met Berkeley photographer Richard Blair, who inspired her, showed her how to take photographs and how to make a darkroom out of a small closet.

Scott would photograph her musical heroes in Rock & Roll, Blues & Outlaw Country who performed in the San Francisco Bay Area as she attempted to capture a sense of who they were and their artistry. Some are performance shots and others are candid photography, shot using a 50mm and 200mm lens with Kodak film.
